Dear Parents/Carers,
Our Students spoke – we listened!
Behaviour for Learning Policy amendments and College Teams With effect from Monday 3rd November 2025
We are writing to inform you that we have made amendments to our Behaviour for Learning policy that will go live as of module 2, Monday 3rd November 2025.
The changes are being introduced following feedback from students, parents and staff. The amendments were made to simplify and streamline behaviour events/sanctions, whilst keeping systems such as all sanctions taking place the following school day.
The updated policy aims to create a more consistent and positive approach to behaviour across the academy.
We will also be introducing ‘Celebration of Success’ assemblies at the end of each module where students receive certificates for reward points, attendance, nominations (tutors and pastoral teams) and for engagement in wider activities (such as engagement in sports and after school clubs).
We have outlined some of the important changes below:
Event logs have been simplified and streamlined:
This will be available online from Monday 3rd November
Mobile phones, smart watches and airpods/earphones:
- Students need to ensure these items are switched off and secured in bags, before entering the academy.
- If seen or heard they will be confiscated and a parent will need to collect these items.
- Students will also receive a 30 minute sanction the following day.
- Please ensure your child knows that ‘on site, out of site’ will be enforced and that will include phones visible in pockets. Please actively encourage them to place safely in their bags.
Lates:
There will no longer be a tiered sanction for lates. Late will be coded as late.
- Any late mark will result in a 30 minute sanction the following day
- Any student who arrives to school without a valid reason, after 9.30am will be placed in the reset room
3 Point Plan (in lessons):
Students will no longer be logged for the first 2 warnings in lessons, if they make the right choice and address their behaviour.
If they reach the 3rd warning (or do something significant to disrupt learning/health and safety), they will be removed from the lesson. Teachers will now make direct contact with home to outline reasons why the child was removed.
Report cards:
Students become a ‘Student of Concern’ when they accumulate multiple negative logs. There is a clear stage system where students will be placed on to report. There is clear guidance for the report cards and stage system within the policy.
Sanctions:
For negative behaviours, there is a clear sanctions grid and all -1 negative logs carry a minimum sanction of 30 minutes the next day.
There have been no changes to the uniform/standards and we would like to take this opportunity to remind parents of the following:
● Make-up/Nails: No make-up is permitted. This includes fake eyelashes, fake nails and teeth decorations. Students are not permitted to wear nail varnish of any kind.
● Jewellery: Students may wear one pair of small stud earrings, one in each lobe. Hoops, rings, necklaces, and bracelets are unsuitable for the academy.
In the event a student cannot rectify any uniform or standard infringements, or refuse to wear an academy loaned item, they will be placed in our Reflection Room. To avoid any unnecessary uniform concerns on the first day back, please ensure your child is compliant with the above. Full uniform expectations are on our website.
We will be holding assemblies for all students on the first day back, to ensure everyone understands the changes and new policy.
We also take this opportunity to share important Safety reminders. As the mornings and evenings draw in and become darker, it is essential that students stay safe on route to and from the academy. We advise that students walk or travel with a friend, they cross the road safely at designated points and be very mindful of their role in staying safe. We also expect our students to be polite and respectful of other pavement and road users during their commute, including respectfully queuing for public transport. Please also reiterate at home, the use of mobile phones while crossing the road can cause significant danger, and we appreciate your support too with this message. Please also note that we expect students to represent the academy to the highest standards in the community both in and out of uniform.
Important changes to our College staffing model
We also make some key staffing changes that are taking place to our college leadership team structure from the beginning of Module 2. This comes following an in-depth review of the needs of the wider academy and how we can best support all students moving forwards. We take this opportunity on behalf of all the Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy to wish Mr Shepherd well in his future endeavours as he vacates Curie College to pursue other challenges in his career.
