Dear Parent/Carer

Re: English as an Additional Language Star Reader Assessment – Catch-Up Session

I am writing to inform you that your child may have missed the EAL Star Reader Assessment that took place in Module 1 this year. As a result, they will be required to attend a catch-up assessment session on Wednesday 19th November 2025.

This assessment will take place in the Lecture Theatre during the school day and will last for approximately one hour.

The session times are as follows:

  • Year 10 and Year 11: 08:30 – 09:30
  • Year 9: 10:00 – 11:00 (students in this session will take Break 2)
  • Year 8: 11:00 – 12:00
  • Year 7: 12:30 – 13:30 (students in this session will take Lunch 2)

The Star Reader Assessment is an important part of our ongoing monitoring and support for students who are identified on our academy systems as having English as an Additional Language (EAL). The results from this assessment help us to ensure that students receive the most appropriate levels of support and intervention to maximise their academic outcomes while studying at Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy.

If your child has missed the assessment, they will receive an appointment card and time on Monday 17th November. If they do not receive one of these – there is no further action required.

We are committed to ensuring that all students with EAL are given the opportunity to thrive both academically and personally. To support this, Miss Bradley, the EAL Co-ordinator, will be working closely with Mr Guildford, the Academy’s Inclusion Lead, to ensure that suitable support strategies are in place for each student.

If you have any questions regarding the assessment or the support available for EAL students, please do not hesitate to contact Miss Bradley directly at georgia.bradley@sgla.latrust.org.uk.

Thank you for your continued support.

Yours faithfully

Adam Guildford | Assistant Principal – Inclusion Lead
