Dear Parent/Carer,

Re: SEND Provision and Communication at Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy

I am writing to inform you about the support we provide for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) here at Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy, and to ensure you are aware of the mechanism for communication with the SEND team.

At Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy, we are committed to ensuring that all children, regardless of their individual needs, have access to a high-quality education that is underpinned by the inclusive philosophy and framework of the International Baccalaureate Programmes. We have a dedicated SEND team, including our SENDCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), who works closely with all staff and external agencies to support children who may need additional help or interventions.

How We Support SEND Students

We offer a range of support depending on the specific needs of each child. This could include:

  • Tailored support plans that are reviewed regularly to ensure the best outcomes for your child.
  • Small group work or one-to-one interventions implemented on a needs assessed basis.
  • Highly developed quality first teaching methods and resources to support access to the curriculum.
  • Collaboration with external specialists, such as speech and language therapists, hearing impaired specialists, educational psychologists, or other relevant professionals, if required.
  • Regular monitoring and assessment to ensure your child’s progress is on track.
  • Use of Chromebooks and adaptive teaching digital tools (Read&Write, Sparx Reader, etc)

We believe that effective communication between home and school is essential to supporting your child’s learning and development. We are committed to keeping you informed about your child’s progress and any additional support they may need. There are several ways we will keep you updated:

  • SEND Support Plans: If your child is identified as needing SEND support, we will create a Student Support Plan (SSP) that outlines the specific targets and support strategies in place. This plan will be shared with you, and your feedback will be welcomed.
  • Annual Reviews (for children with Education, Health and Care Plans): If your child has an Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP), we will conduct an annual review meeting to discuss their progress, set new targets, and determine whether any adjustments are needed.
  • Regular Updates: If any issues arise, we will contact you as soon as possible to ensure any concerns are addressed promptly. We encourage you to also communicate with us if you have any concerns or queries about your child’s SEND provision. You are also welcome to attend our SEND coffee mornings held three times a year

We are fully committed to working with you in partnership to ensure that your child receives the best possible education and support. If you have any questions or would like further information about SEND provision at Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with using our new designated SEND email address, send@sgla.latrust.org.uk.

Yours faithfully,
Barry Stephenson | Deputy Principal
